Pediatric and Adolescent Physical Therapy

Treatment of pediatric and adolescent injuries involves understanding the effects of growth, age-specific anatomy, and social issues.

Growth spurts make kids vulnerable because their muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones are growing rapidly, and they are often growing at different rates. This imbalance causes tightness in muscles and tendons around joint insertions, resulting in a loss of flexibility that increases the risk of injury.

Another factor is the age-specific anatomy. Active growth plates in young bones are weaker and more susceptible to injury than normal adult bone.  Consequently, overuse injury and inflammation to bone are more frequent in the pediatric population.

Social issues to consider when treating kids include the concerns of parents, coaches and peer groups, among others, as well as the young person’s life style, eating habits, self-esteem and other human issues.
