Frequently Asked Questions
Do you provide Aquatic Therapy?
Yes. We offer aquatic therapy at many clinics, including Smyrna, Lebanon, Winchester, Farragut, and Hendersonville.
Why should patients receive treatment from a licensed therapist, not a physical therapy assistant (PTA)?
A physical therapy assistant is neither trained nor licensed to evaluate a patient’s condition. To gauge progress and maximize recovery, we believe a patient should be evaluated at every visit.
What information do I need to refer a patient?
We need only the patient’s name and phone number. Insurance information is helpful but not required. You can fax this to us. Find the nearest location and fax number. If you prefer, you can download a referral form. We will call the patient to set up the initial consultation and treatment.
Do you do FCE’s?
Yes. A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is often requested for patients under worker's compensation treatment. This 4-hour test includes medical record review, musculoskeletal screening, and physical ability testing. We look at critical job demands and use extensive validity criteria testing to ensure consistent findings. For disability assessment, we perform a modified 2-hour test, the "disability FCE". (Note: This test is not covered by insurance and requires up-front payment.)
How long does it take to get a patient scheduled?
We call every patient within 24 hours of receiving your fax. We aim to get every patient scheduled within 24 to 48 hours. We can accommodate walk-ins or same day appointments 90% of the time.
Do you use a lot of modalities in your treatment?
In very acute cases, we use modalities such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, heat, or ice to help prevent soreness from manual or exercise therapy.
Isn’t all physical therapy the same?
No. Results Physiotherapy achieves better outcomes. (See the current evidence)
We routinely hear three comments from our patients who’ve tried other providers:
“This is completely different!"
"The other therapist never touched me."
“All I got was a sheet of exercises."
At Results Physiotherapy, every patient receives hands-on therapy to release muscle and joint tension, along with a customized exercise program, never a generic sheet.
What is manual therapy?
Manual therapy incorporates hands-on treatment techniques such as soft-tissue massage, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, and joint mobilization. It is not the same as the “cracking” and “popping” of osteopathic/chiropractic care. Physical therapists use their hands to address joint stiffness, muscle spasm, muscle overactivity, tightness, and pain. This makes it easier for patients to tolerate their therapeutic exercises.
What’s the clinical evidence showing better outcomes from manual therapy combined with exercise?
Over the last 10 to 20 years, many well designed research studies (double-blind randomized controlled trials, clinical prediction rules, systematic reviews, Cochrane reviews, etc.) have shown a significant benefit from manual therapy combined with exercise. This combination showed higher results for reducing pain, improving function, increasing patient satisfaction, and lowering cost, especially when compared to higher risk interventions. New studies continue to support these findings. See the current evidence.
What is your philosophy on exercise?
Exercise is what gets people better, and we believe it should be prescribed like medicine. We have to change muscle activation patterns, and for maximum benefit, the exercise dosage has to be correct for each individual. Unfortunately, some physical therapists focus too much on exercise and forget the patient’s pain. We design progressive exercise programs, which are easier for the patient to tolerate. We begin by increasing pain-free range of motion. Then as the patient’s pain diminishes, we progress to core stability and strengthening exercises to maintain pain-free ROM and prevent recurrence. Postural re-education plays a large role in changing muscle activation patterns. Ultimately, the patient progresses to full functional activity.
Which patients are appropriate for physical therapy?
Any patient whose pain is related to the musculoskeletal system and is biomechanical in nature can benefit. Any patient who is unable to do functional activities because of pain, weakness, or stiffness will also benefit.
Do you have flexible hours?
Yes. We offer early morning appointments as needed, and all our clinics are open after business hours, to either 6 or 6:30pm.
Do my patients see the same therapist at every visit?
Yes. We believe this is a key element in patient progress. Each licensed therapist gets to know his or her patients and to evaluate their progress at each visit. This allows for quick therapy modification if needed. The only exceptions are for vacation coverage or when the patient’s other commitments make scheduling difficult. If such a transfer is needed, the therapists review the patient's status together to ensure a smooth transition.
