Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between a physical therapist and a physiotherapist?
Physiotherapy is physical therapy, only more effective. Physiotherapy is the European/Australian term for physical therapy. Its the same profession, but the practice is different. In the US, physical therapy training standards vary from one university to the next. Some programs cover hands-on manual therapy, while some cover only exercise. In Europe and Australia, the standards are rigorously consistent, based on studies of patient success. Research shows that when personalized mobility exercises are combined with hands-on release of tight muscles and joints, patients achieve better outcomes. Because of these studies, physiotherapy is now considered the world-class standard. At Results Physiotherapy, we guarantee that every clinician receives ongoing professional training in physiotherapy.
Do I need a physician referral to see a Results physical therapist?
No. By Tennessee law, you have “direct access.” That means you can see a physical therapist for up to 12 visits or 30 days without a physician referral.
Does my insurance cover Results Physiotherapy without a physician referral?
Yes. Results Physiotherapy is credentialed with most major insurance companies, and manual physical therapy is a standard covered service. Over 95% of insurance companies cover our treatment without a physician referral.

What should I expect on my first day?
A licensed physical therapist will meet with you to conduct a detailed medical history and orthopedic assessment. Usually, we will initiate treatment that same day, beginning with hands-on therapy to relieve your pain, stiffness, and muscle spasm. We’ll discuss your therapy goals, and you’ll receive a clear explanation of your condition and treatment plan, plus a personalized home exercise program. We’ll do everything possible to help you achieve a quick and pain free recovery.
Do I need an X-ray or MRI before beginning physical therapy?
In most cases, no. If your physical therapist feels you may need further tests, we will discuss this with you and your physician before beginning treatment.
Do you treat low back pain?
Yes! Low back pain is our specialty. Manual physical therapy has shown extraordinary success in treating the spine. The gentle hands-on release of spinal tension makes it easier and more comfortable for you to perform core stability exercises which strengthen your back. This combination of hands-on therapy and core exercise ensures long-lasting recovery without the need for surgery, drugs or repetitive chiropractic “cracking”.
What other conditions do you treat?
Our licensed physical therapists treat all conditions addressed by standard physical therapy. See our list.
Will I get exercises to do at home?
Yes. You’ll receive an exercise program customized for your needs. We do not hand out generic exercise sheets. At your first visit, we’ll show you the correct and comfortable way to perform your personalized home exercises. On your next visit, we’ll check again that you’re doing these correctly. As your condition improves, your exercise program will advance. Home exercise helps you sustain your recovery without further treatment. Long-lasting results are our goal.
How are you different from a chiropractor or massage therapist?
We won’t subject you to repeated "cracking" and "popping" of your joints. Neither should you expect a general “relaxation” massage. Instead, you get highly focused treatment to relieve your pain. Our physical therapists begin with gentle release of your tight muscles and joints to help you feel better. Along with that, you learn customized exercises to ensure your lasting improvement. You can expect noticeable results with fewer visits. Manual physical therapy is the new world-class standard in physical rehabilitation.
How long does each session last?
We can be flexible to fit your schedule. Treatment sessions generally last 45 to 60 minutes, but if you need a shorter session, simply ask your therapist.
How many visits will I need?
Everyone is physically unique. Some people reach their goals within 3 visits. Other cases take longer. On average, patients are pain free and fully functional after 8 to 9 sessions. The earlier you begin treatment, the fewer sessions you typically need. At your first visit, we’ll discuss how many sessions you will likely need to make a full recovery.
